The Beauty of Facial Steaming

A facial steam is one of my favorite ways to relax, pamper my skin and treat myself to a relaxing self-care experience.

Not only is facial steaming beneficial to the skin in many ways (which we’ll discuss below), it’s also a beautifully relaxing and meditative experience that allows you to take time out for pampering, wellness and spiritual renewal. Facial steams are the perfect DIY skincare treatment that you can do at home – inexpensive, quick and easy!  What more could a girl ask for?

    All you need is water, a pot or bowl and a towel.  Your skin will enjoy numerous beautiful benefits from your DIY facial steam. Facial steaming not only helps to soften and prepare the skin’s ability to absorb moisture, in some cases, facial steaming might help to control or reduce mild acne breakouts.

Moisture from the steam softens the surface layer of the skin and helps to free dirt and bacteria that may be trapped and causing breakouts.  Steaming also prepares your skin so that it readily absorbs the products you use after your treatment.  Think about how your skin absorbs a moisturizing lotion like our Body Velvet after a shower or bath.  A facial steam gives those same benefits – we are simply targeting one area of our body.  The warm humidity from the steam increases perspiration and may stimulate blood circulation on the surface of the skin giving your face a warm, healthy glow.

A word of caution if you have severe acne or extremely sensitive skin.  Steaming may worsen a skin condition, so please use caution and be sure to check with your dermatologist if you are seeing one.  Certain skin conditions that are aggravated by sweating or increased blood circulation such as rosacea or fungal infection could be made worse with facial steaming.

Most steaming treatments use water that is about 110 degrees Fahrenheit.  This is warm enough to make you sweat and that is all we want to do.  Be careful about using water that is too hot.  Facial steaming should create the feeling of being in a steam room – the warm steam enveloping you and leading you to a relaxing spa like experience.  Using water that is too hot is not only uncomfortable, but can cause damage to your skin.

Now that we’ve talked about the benefits and areas of caution, let’s get steaming!

  1. You’ll want to begin with a clean face. Cleanse your skin gently and thoroughly before your facial steam.
  2. In a pot, heat water and remove from heat just before boiling (water boils at 212 degrees – much hotter than what we need, but we’ll have time to steep our tea and allow the water to cool a bit before beginning our facial steam).
  3. Pour water into a glass or ceramic bowl and add tea if desired.
  4. Be sure water has cooled enough to begin steaming.
  5. Drape a towel over your head and lean over the bowl.

This is my favorite part!  You are literally creating a cocoon and place of rest away from the world for these few moments.  While you’re steaming, breathe deeply in and out and allow your mind to rest.

Be sure to stay about 12 inches away from the water. It’s tempting to get closer – especially once you are used to the heat.  But, to be safe and not cause damage to your skin, keep this distance in mind while you are steaming. You can steam for up to 10 minutes.  It’s also ok to steam for a minute, then take a break for a few minutes.  You can repeat this process several times for up to 10 minutes. If you are claustrophobic or the enclosed steam becomes too much, another option is to soak a clean wash cloth in the brew and apply it to your face and then repeat with a clean cloth.

When you have completed your facial steam, cleanse your skin with a clean, warm cloth and follow up with your preferred skincare routine, including a facial toner and moisturizer.

My personal criteria is that the tea must be organically grown and harvested.

This gentle blend is antibacterial, brightening, toning and excellent for fighting breakouts.
